Creosote and soot buildup is why you need to sweep your chimney. The creosote doesn't magically disappear without it being swept out and removed. Excessive buildup can lead to a chimney fire and that's why hiring a certified chimney sweep is the most important part of your regular chimney maintenance. If your chimney sweep company doesn't inform you of the creosote levels, then you need to hire someone who does. Attached is a before and after photo of a chimney sweep I performed.
